Maintain Grounds & Driver Assistant

As the first to greet program participants and the last to see them off, the Maintain Grounds and Driver Assistant plays a vital role in creating a welcoming environment on campus. This position supports the Maintenance Grounds Technician in various tasks related to grounds keeping, gardening, and machinery operations, while also providing transportation for pickups and drop-offs. The maintenance crew works from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM and may include weekends. This role is suitable for individuals at all experience levels in glass, especially those interested in learning more about glass art and maintenance, as well as those who enjoy hands-on outdoor work.

Recommended Experience:

  • Interest in glass art and commitment to being part of an art school community
  • Enjoyment of outdoor, hands-on tasks, including building maintenance and landscaping
  • A valid, unrestricted driver’s license, good driving history, and 2+ years of driving experience
  • Experience using basic tools such as drills, power saws, and hand tools
  • Strong work ethic and ability to be a collaborative team player

General Outline of Tasks:

  • Work closely with the Maintenance Grounds Technician to assist in specialized maintenance projects, including garden preparation and development (weeding, irrigation, fence building), building upgrades, and machinery operation (training provided for tractor, telehandler, chainsaws, etc.)
  • Coordinate the arrival and departure of program participants for pickups at the shuttle station
  • Prepare the campus for special events such as the student-to-student auction, picnics, spring tours, and classes with specific grounds needs
  • Ensure the safe operation of tools and machinery, as well as general campus and vehicle safety
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and collaborate with the maintenance crew on special projects
  • A commitment of four sessions is required for this position

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to work outdoors in inclement weather and around grass, trees, and pollen
  • Comfortable working with loud machinery
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs and navigate the rugged campus terrain

Compensation:

  • May work up to, but not more than, 40 hours a week at $18 per hour
  • Designated studio time available on days off and outside of work hours and program needs
