When making large scale objects through high temperature kiln-casting (1650˚F) mold failure becomes more of a concern. Methods developed to make castings in excess of 8 feet tall required bullet proof jackets around the plaster-based investment molds. These jackets hold molds together so that even in large castings you can get fingerprint resolution. Starting with slide presentations, we will examine the problems encountered when scaling castings up in size and weight. At the end of the lecture, we will cut a large completed casting out of a mold to see the results made possible with these materials and techniques.
About Daniel Clayman
In 1984 Clayman began his explorations in cast glass .His work reveals his interests in engineering, the behavior of light, and the memory of experience. Working large and small, he employs technology from the simplest hand tool to the latest three-dimensional modeling and production tools, maintaining his studio in RI.
