This class will focus on problem solving through design. We will discuss the core principals of design and object ideation as well as the steps necessary to execute our ideas.Through daily lecture and demos we will be discussing themes such as design from formal perspective, consideration of audience and intention, as well as the importance of production processes to arrive at fully thought-out product. We will be approaching process from the lens of both designer and fabricator. Students should come with an open mind, sketch book and great attitude ready to learn and share!
Adam Holtzinger is a co-founder of KEEP handblown glass lighting + objects in Brooklyn, N.Y. With more than 25 years of experience in glass and design, he produces his own work, as well as glass objects for some of the world's top artists, designers and architects. Holtzinger’s works can be seen in museum exhibitions around the globe, in commercial and residential spaces and have been featured in design magazines and newspapers such as The New York Times.
Susan Špiranović is a Croatian-American artist with an interest in creating meaningful dialogue between material and heritage, exploring how history can be examined to rethink and create new traditions through glass. Her work was recently exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum. Špiranović is also co-founder of KEEP in Brooklyn, N.Y. with partner Adam Holtzinger. They have more than 40 years of experience in the glass and design worlds and have been featured in publications such as the New York Times.
Sophie Lou Jacobsen is a French-American designer currently based in NYC. Focusing on objects of everyday use, using mostly glass as a medium, she explores the interaction between object and user. Pursuing the idea that objects have an innate power to enhance their user's mood through form and function, she questions how simple rituals can be altered in ways that are surprising, delightful, and elevate the user experience.
