Cold Shop Coordinator

Join us as the Cold Shop Coordinator, where you’ll oversee our shared cold working studio, welcoming all campus participants on a walk-in basis. The Cold Shop typically operates from 8:00 AM to 11:00 PM, with breaks for meals, events, and artist presentations. You’ll coordinate your schedule with the Cold Shop Assistant to ensure coverage during busy hours. In this role, you’ll conduct orientations, monitor the studio, provide project guidance, assist with upkeep and repairs, and support the Cold Shop Assistant and fellows in enhancing their skills. When time allows, you’ll also help coldwork the Artist in Residence’s projects.

Recommended Experience:

  • Extensive expertise in coldworking techniques (cutting, polishing, engraving, sandblasting, gluing, etc.)
  • Experience managing a studio with participants of varying skill levels on diverse projects
  • Background in coldworking production, artist assistance, or project fabrication

General Outline of Tasks:

  • Oversee the technical operation of the Cold Shop, supported by the Cold Shop Assistant
  • Mentor the Cold Shop Assistant in studio operations, scheduling, and safety protocols
  • Maintain stock of Cold Shop consumables by ordering supplies with the Retail and Supplies Manager
  • Provide safety orientations on proper equipment and material usage to program participants

Ensure the safe use of equipment and tools, collaborating with the Cold Shop Assistant and fellows

  • Report equipment issues to the Studios Manager and Seasonal Technician, assisting with troubleshooting and repairs as needed
  • Facilitate positive communication among campus participants sharing the studio
  • Organize daily clean-ups and the end-of-session tidy-up
  • Prepare the studio for walkthroughs and special events
  • Complete all assigned projects by the end of each session
  • Attend scheduled weekly staff meetings and program meetings

Compensation:

  • A minimum commitment of two sessions is required for the Cold Shop Coordinator position
  • Work up to 40 hours per week at a rate of $22 per hour
  • Room and board provided while on campus
