In this introductory class, participants have the opportunity to learn from Sara Ficklin and will be learning the basics of working with soft glass in the hot shop. Students will focus on how to navigate around the studio, how to incorporate color into pieces, and make artistic paper weights and a cup. Using tools, breath, and heat, each participant will have a chance to learn the basics of glass working. Students will acquire a better understanding of how the glass turns from a liquid into a colorful, solid piece of art!
No experience requried. Lunch will be provided in Pilchuck's historic lodge.
Participants age 14+ are welcome. Parents or guardians must sign up alongside participants under the age of 18.
Sara Ficklin, Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, Seattle, WA, studied at Butte College in CA. In conjunction with 2D imagery & glass, Sara has recently created a body of work that is a connection of ancestral heritage and her childhood memories of growing up on a ranch in Wyoming. The swirling colors are an ode to both the Wyoming wind and ever evolving recollection of memories. As time marches on, memories shift and change with the patina of forgetfulness or of revelations.
Sara creates to honor the endless line of ancestors, who blazed the opportunities for the current generation. And to process the scars of the past.
