Participants may select one workshop per session, during which they will be fully immersed in a vibrant educational environment on the breathtaking Pilchuck campus for the duration of the session. All participants eat, work, and sleep on campus for the entire session. Days include intensive instruction and demos throughout the day and evening, as well as ample opportunities for personal exploration and studio time. Housing is warm and rustic and most accommodations require a brief walk through fields and forest to reach the studios.

Botanical Printmaking with Glass

Printmaking

We will use Pilchuck Glass School’s natural environment as a reference to create vitreograph plates to be sent through a press and printed on printmaking paper. Students will leave with a portfolio of Pacific Northwest- themed fine art prints - inked by hand and printed using an etching press - and a new way of thinking about glass as a matrix.

This workshop will cover basic glassmaking skills from gathering out of the furnace, shaping on the marver, to working with a team at the bench. Focusing on kiln-formed glass slumping, students will learn several prop-making techniques to achieve free-flowing sculptures in multiple firings. Encouraging inventive combinations, prop set-ups include slip-cast ceramic, hardened blanket, wire, and kiln furniture to guide glass into spontaneous, energetic forms. The course will also explore the art of installation by mixing glass with other materials and responding to the environment.

This class will cover aspects of design, pricing, and installing your work as you create a challenging leaded glass project. Ted will illuminate technical aspects of creating larger panels along with the fine craft techniques that will set your work apart.

Lathe Engraving for Flameworkers

In this course students can expect to receive an introduction to the engraving lathe with a secondary focus on how wheel cutting can relate to flameworking processes. This will be a primarily technical class. Students can expect to improve their engraving hand-skills with proficiency-building exercises. Objects made on the torch will be engraved, then manipulated again in the flame.

Artist in Residence

Candice Lin

Candice Lin lives and works in Altadena, California. Her practice utilizes installation, drawing, video, and living materials and processes, such as bacteria, fermentation, and stains. Lin has had recent solo exhibitions at MUMA, Melbourne, Australia (2024), Canal Projects, New York (2023), Spike Island, Bristol, United Kingdom (2022).

Jack Spitzer

Born in Tacoma Washington Jack Spitzer is a product of being raised in the Pacific Northwest glass scene. At twelve years old he began blowing glass and quickly showed skillful potential. Jack currently works for Dante Marioni, Dale Chihuly, and Jason Christian. He enjoys traditional fine glass blowing techniques.

Gaffer

Trenton Quiocho

Trenton Quiocho is a Filipino-American, Tacoma, WA native who has worked with glass for over 18 years in various capacities. He has held positions as a glassblower, hot shop technician, and teaching artist with organizations including Chihuly, Inc., glassybaby, Hilltop Artists, and the Museum of Glass. Currently, he is a glassblower with Chihuly, Inc., and contracts with Museum of Glass for special events.

Program

Every summer since 1971 the glass world has come together for innovative and rigorous workshops with an international cohort of instructors and artists. In 2025 we will host seven sessions.

The summer is filled with an all-star roster including Jen Elek, Annette Blair, Ben Edols, Jessica Loughlin, Sibelly, Danny Coyle, Dante Marioni and more. An advanced topics Spring Session will include an opportunity to be a part of Pilchuck history by rebuilding one of the program furnaces with Fred Metz. Session 3 will see the return of lampworking maestro Lucio Bubacco for a 30-year reunion of his Flame to Furnace collaboration with Brian Kerkvliet and Ed Schmid. Preston Singletary and Martin Janecký will bring their combined approach to Session 4. Silvia Levenson returns during Session 5, Pilchuck’s first bi-lingual (Spanish/English) session.
